India is a country of different Religions and Festivals. The major festivals of India are Diwali & Dussehra during which people pray for Prosperity & Happiness in Life. Dussehra is nine nights and ten days long and has been celebrated for centuries and marks the victory of Good over Evil power such as the Victory Of Goddess Durga on Devil Mahishasura and the Victory of King Of Ayodhya Sri Rama on King Of Sri-Lanka Ravana. Hence it symbolizes conquest of Good over Evil. Generally, Dussehra is celebrated outside the house or in a community or public ground, where there is a Campus of Dussehra Carnival. During these ten days of the Ashwin month, some people play the role of each character from Ramayana and perform a drama on stage in the span of 10 days, and on the Tenth Day, the person who is playing the role of Sri Rama fires an effigy of Ravana showing the battle of Right & Wrong, and the Victory of the pure/good soul.
A Scene from Ramleela |
The Campus Dussehra Mela/Carnival is set on the first night of Durga pooja. According to the Indian calendar, the first nine days of the month of Ashwin, are devoted to Goddess Durga and her Sculptures decorated with Traditional Indian costumes. The Process of Decorating God & Goddess is called “Sringaar”. As soon as the Sringaar is completed, Pandits begin singing Sanskrit/Hindi songs which are also known as “Aarti”. The Last procedure or step to complete a Durga Pooja, is “Prasad Bhog”. According to the Indian tradition the Sweet or Food has to be served to Goddess Durga first, and then it will be distributed to devotees. The food or sweet prepared by the devotees is called “Prasadam".
Dussehra Carnival
“Dussehra Carnival” is a ten days long festival, in which some people conduct a Drama “Ramleela” based on the Great Indian Granth “Ramayana”. The Five main characters of Ramleela are Lord Rama, Devi Seeta(Wife of Rama), Lakshamana(Brother of Rama), Hanuman and Ravana(King of Srilanka). The campus of Dussehra Carnival also known as “Ramleela Ground”, is set in 5 acres Land and decorated with Food Stalls, Home Decor Stalls, Book stalls, Clothing &a Apparels Stalls, Crockery, Toys and much more, where the crowd present is enormous. Because of the number of customers on all the nine days, vendors from entire Delhi, come and take an initiative to sell unique and cultural goods, which convince the customers to purchase the goods with their own beauty.
Campus decorated with Lights, Tents & Effigies |
While planning a visit for Dussehra Carnival, one doesn’t have to navigate himself to the place, they just have to step out and approach to the nearest Community Ground, where the night is shining more glorious than before with lights, bulbs and Big rides for Kids & Adults both.
The Stars of Dussehra Carnival are three brothers from Srilanka. That is King of Srilanka Ravana, and his Two brothers Meghanath & Kumbhkarana. These three brothers were killed by Lord Rama and his Brother Lakshman. These three brothers turn into ashes every year when the person portraying Lord Rama lights a fire in their respective statues.

The food at Ramleela Ground
And here comes the main thing. “The Food”. Talking about the food has always been my favorite and food is the star of each and every event, where my kinda bloggers generally gather and seek the delicious food around, with a camera. The hissing sound of deep frying food and cutlets in the huge Kadhai(Wok), Pan of toasting-roasting dried spices and the fragrance of flavors from each cuisine of India, is pretty easy to find there.
Kathi Kebabs & Pav Bhaji |
Now shall we discuss what you'll find there in food stalls & what's good to eat there?? And why??
There are a no. Of Kulfi Wala or Ice Cream stalls, and two of them came here to sell kulfis from Meerut(Uttarpradesh) and Jaipur(Rajasthan). Personally I found both the Kulfis great and would recommend you to try them too.
Now, coming to the food, Generally Delhites love spicy food and they love eating outside the home. The Food for Delhites, Kathi Kebabs(Veg.), Momos(Paneer & Veg.), Golgappas or Puchkas, Aloo Tikki & Chaat, and much more.
Mirchi Bada & Tandoori Kulhad Chai |
Now comes the rivalry between North And South Indian cuisines. The South indian food tastes smooth in flavor and texture as well and is made with mild spices. Also, Coconut, Rice Flour & Pulses are the star ingredients of South Indian Food.
Chinese Snacks…. The Star snack of every party is Spring rolls and ChowMein with chilli potatoes served with manchurian curry. The fragrance of schezwan sauce is easy to locate in the entire campus and the thing that makes you love to eat is the color of veggies and the food.
Coming to another unique, flavorful and spicy Indian cuisines- Pyaaz Kachori, Mawa Kachori, Kadhi-Kachori, Mirchi Bada, and The Rajasthani Thali. Some other star items were of Rajasthani Rasoi- Dal Batti, Churma and some delightful dessert i.e., Kesar Kulfi.
The main attraction for me in the carnival was the Tandoori Chai, where the chef/preparer kept some mini pots in tandoor, which turned red due to the excess temperature. After they take it out they pour tea in it and let the tea boil.
You may love the scene and start recording video of it. It was such a delight to the eyes and to have a sip. Just have a look at Video below.
On my recommendation you should visit here once to have fun and to shop something really amazing. And the most exciting thing that you must visit for is Ravana, Meghanath & Kumbh Karan Effigies and the Fireworks are a delight to the eye. Also, keep your kids with you and don't let them go alone for ride or anywhere on campus, they might get lost in between all the hustle bustle.
